Class began with a short discussion about what our final exam will look like. According to Ms. Wray, the bulk of our final will come from The Kite Runner unit. The test will also consist of semester 2 vocabulary and an essay in which we will tie together multiple themes from the literature we read this year. Next, we took a brief visit to the Open Garden that was hosted by the essential life skills students. We were able to see all the hard work that our peers had put into this beautiful community garden. The rest of the class was devoted to a discussion based upon the reading. We also got into smaller groups and discussed the differences between Afghan and American cultures.

Today was Wednesday. Billy had avatar haircut! Mike Mott was gone. Before the quiz we talked about how our generation is the least empathetic in history. Then we took our quiz. Then we discussed the quiz and more about the book. Then we watched two clips about the author and his life.

We started this class with a discussion of the value of teenagers reading books and stories of hardship. Emily gave a very thoughtful speech on this matter but i have no idea what she said. After the discussion we had a four part journal write which led into a discussion of the rape scene and "what would you have done". Eventually this segwayed (this is showing up as a typo but i'm 98% sure it's a word) into a discussion of human morals and culture in general with mentions of many social experiments. We finished this class by reading.
The homework is to read the second section of reading. Next class is Wednesday.

At the beginning of class we recieved our reading schedule for The Kite Runner. Then we were given a blue sheet that we were supposed to write down some stuff in which you live your life by. Then you write a time you did or didnt go by it and the consenquence that came along with it. Then we had a pretty long discussion about Kite Runner and how whatever happens to him realyl changes who he grows up to be. Next we went from table to table filling on sheets about the characters, setting and races of Kite Runner. Finally we finished the class by reading.

First we turned in our Attribution of Research, or did we. Only 1/2 of class acually turned it in well and complete. Mrs. Wray went into "Mom mode" and got seriously pissed. It's wierd cause I wouldn't blame her at all. I would be pissed to that my class diddn't so their Homework. Paul was confused and didn't get we had homework. Which makes me curious why Paul is speaking up for the class. Anyways after Mrs. Wray and I were confused about the whole issue, we got in our table groups. We explained and exclaimed what we found in our groups and discussions. Mrs. Wray was still in a bad mood, but some ho got it together. Then she went over what needs to be done for the Draft. Yes, this was about the FINAL DRAFT!!!

Started the day off with a very thrilling handing in of our revised rough drafts for Mrs. Wray to read. Oh yeah guess what boys and girls?! No more vocab quizies! Woot! After that exciting news we started journal #20 which was about the end of the novel. After that thrilling journal we discussed the end of the book and mostly everyone disliked the book in general. After Mrs. Wray heard all of our complaints she spent 20 minutes showing us all the symbolism and how this was a great book she did a good job, but I don't think anyone cared. :)

At the beginning of the class we took a very difficult vocabulary test. The test was much different from all of the others but i don't think i am supposed to talk about it in the scribe notes in case you haven't taken it yet. After we finished the vocab which took longer than usual we did a journal write (number 19) about ASP if i remember right and we discussed the journal rite for the rest of the class. At the beginning of class we wrote down our homework (which i will tell later), then we got with a partner to peer edit our marvelous living history RD papers. Rachel's was AWESOME! and intense. After about half of the class period went by we switched gears to A Separate Peace. Mrs. Wray told us to get in groups with people who we haven't worked with this year. I chose Lydia and Bethany, they were debating part of the time about random things in the book. In those groups of about 3 or 4 we were either assigned to Gene or Finny and then we had to come up with three words describing them in the beginning of the novel and then three words PLUS a quote about the character from now in the book. Then we were supposed to answer questions but we didn't really get to that part, so we just discussed them, well some of them. So there are currently 28 and a half days of school left time its SUMMER TIME! yes we are all excited and we are counting down the days but Mrs. Wray is still assigning homework:

-Read Chapters 9 AND 10
-Vocab Quiz 16 next class (scores were low last time so use QUIZLET, its your friend!)
-Revised Rough Draft due Tuesday 5/18

P.S. you can sign up in Mrs. Wray's classroom for writing conferences, it looked like the times were filling up so if you want an awesome opportunity to work with Mrs. Wray then sign up NOW!

6 weeks of class left

First part of class, we took the list 15 vocab test, so that we could immediately jump into....
Our reading quiz! After that, we moved on to discussion of the first two chapters of A Separate Peace.
An interesting discussion on jealousy and friendship occurred, which was both enlightening and intelligent.
Next, we did an activity regarding attributes of the characters . We then moved on to a journal write
in which we chose a topic to agree or disagree with, and had a spirited discussion on sarcasm, winning
and loosing in sports, and other interesting topics.

Homework: Read chapters 3-4 (A Separate Peace of course)

Today, classes were only an hour long due to the inservice day. We started a little late because Mrs. Wray had to talk to certain students who didn't have all their notes and source. She informed us of how important to keep up on our work because this is a huge project that we need to do well on to pass. After that, we got into the groups we were in last class. Each group was given a word from the novel,
A Separate Peace. We wrote the definition, examples, reactions, a phrase, and a question. After every group shared their poster, we went to the library to get A Separate Peace. When we got back, we started reading. We read about, two pages, and then the bell rang.
Homework:
-Study for the vocab quiz (next class)
-Keep researching if you need more facts
-Read chapters 1-2 of
A Separate Peace. Be ready for a reading quiz next class.

This is a day late... no extra credit :( because I had a track meet yesterday and I didn't get home until quite late! So it wouldn't have been any help. But here it is:
1. We did a free write
2. We learned about appositives
3. We turned in our Think Piece, and got 5+ extra credit points if we turned it in error free
EXAMPLE: "The table dispenser, a way to attach things, sits on the table." -Ms. Wray
4. Using more vivid language in our writing
EXAMPLE: Instead of, "The diamond- scaled snakes attacked their pray", write, "Hissing their forked red tongues and coiling their cold bodies, the diamond- scaled snakes attacked their prey." (This is a participial phrase)
5. We were assigned the "Living History" paper. We got a list of possible topics to choose from, among others of your own ideas, and the idea is to research that topic (September 11th, Pompeii, the destruction of Rome, ect. Whatever you want to do), and create a 5- 7 page historical fiction paper including at least 25 historical facts woven into the storyline. See Ms. Wray for the sheets we got and for details.

Homework is... vocab list #14 and to finish the participle worksheet

Haha, I guess I'm doing this a bit too late t get the extra credit, hehe oh well! At least those absent will know what to do now!

Today really, we didn't do much. At the beginning of the class we took the vocab quiz, there will be sentences, so STUDY! I failed epically, but what's done is done. After that we took out our Ven Diagrams, the big peice of paper with the two circles overlapping, and got it stamped. You must bring it to the next class because we turn them in. We spent the rest of the period going more indepth about the differances between the tragedy and comedy. The homework is called "Think Piece" it is 250-300 words maximum, so mainly one page double spaced. The idea is to compare and contrast the two plays, but you can NOT use setting as a topic. After figuring out the topic you must then write a thesis or topic sentence. The paper is mainly suppose to be a minni essay with a thesis, boidy paragraphs and a closer. This is due next class, have fun! For more details please contact Ms. Wray!

Journal write #15. Discussion on the play(on what you thought of the ending of the play and what your opinion was) Before the beginning of class, Billy, Peter, and Emily talked about random things, don't know why though, lol. And of course gunner had to say," Macbeth was born of women and not C-section," in one of his "many voices of Gunnar". There was a "Types of Questions" worksheet, then the class asked the questions and they all said there opinion on them. Good questions and answers.
HW: Creative Project is due- 4/1(no joke!)

"Beware the Ides of March" Ms. Wray mentioned this saying at the beginning of class. I guess March 15th was the day Julius Cesar was famously assassinated by his friend Brutus. The meaning of this saying is to not become confident and it applies to today's class because there was a vocab quiz unlike any quiz in the past. It was actually hardish. Well if you studied a lot you probably did fine but be aware if you missed today because it is a little harder than the past quizzes we've taken. Study up! After List 12 Vocab Quiz, the class did Journal Write #14 or whatever number it is because everyone seems to have different numbers. For the journal write we wrote done characteristics of good and evil. Then using these characteristics, we answered the question Is Macbeth pure evil? Most of the class said he wasn't pure evil but still evil. Next Ms. Wray put a picture up of Leon Trotsky and many class members remembered him as the guy who was assassinated by an icepick while eating tacos. He was also Stalin's right hand man but once he saw how bad Stalin's intentions were he fled to Mexico (kinda like Banquo being suspicious and MacDuff fleeing). This led up to us listening to Act 4 Scene 3. MacDuff and Malcom meet in England and Malcom, at first, does not trust MacDuff but eventually learns his intentions to end Macbeth's reign is legit. Then we answered question about the reading and turned those in. Everyone seemed extra sleepy today so try and get some sleep for next class.

When class started Mrs.Wray collected our Macbeth letters. Mrs. Wray then handed out our Macbeth Creative Assignment( due April 1st, ITS SUUUPPPER IMPORTANT). After that we summarized 3-4. To go along with the summary we did our journal 14, during which Tanner started complaining that his head hurt. To answer the questions Tanner was called upon, he didnt know the answer. We then had an interesting conversation about rivers of blood. We listened to 3-5 and 3-6 on tape, Ava commented about the freaky voices. Then we got randomly divided into groups based on the section, like 3-4, and talked about it. we then created a living picture, like a snapshot of an important moment.

At the start of class, Paul talked about how snowboarding was not a sport. Paul also had 2 great ideas for extra credit. We are now going over our homework with our table group and telling one another what our answers were. We went over the quotes and people shard what they had. We then turned it in. We read Act 3 scene 2. We are now getting out half sheets of paper and writing metaphors(or whatever you go assigned to find in the book). After we did that, as a table group we wrote them on a big sheet of paper and drew pictures for them too! FIGHT!! FIGHT!! We are acting Act 3 scene 2 with swords and all!! At the begiining of the class we started by taking our seconds vocab quiz. In the middle of the quiz Aj found his water bottle that Mr. Bertram swore wasnt in the room last class. Next we got stamps on ourresponse logs. We then had a group discussion about our reading of 2.4. Before we could even finish that everyone began to freak out about section 3.1 and what character they wanted to read as. Tj got elected to be Banquo but said no because he was ready to talk in front of the class yet. We read 3.1 in a group and we recieved a piece of paper with a paragraph in todays english about Macbeths main speech in 3.1 and the first group to rearange the list in the right order got a prize. Finally we worked on a sheet about how Macbeth persuaded the murderes to kill Banquo and we passed back work.

Well we hit the ground running today and we started talking about the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Then we had a journal write. It was number 11, 12, 13, or 14. people had one of those 4, but it does not really matter what number as long as you are close.
The journal write was about our predictions of what will happen later in macbeth. We had to find quotes for the book to help support our argument. It has to be a minimum of a half page.
There was some pretty outrageous predictions, and there were a few that could happen.
Mrs. Wray stamped our response logs( you should have 4 done)

Ms. Wray wasn't here today so we had Mr. Bertram substitute (Ms. Wray's son is sick).
We started the class with our discussion of the book. We wrote journal #11, "What was Macbeth's
feelings about seeing Banquo the night of the murder?" Turns out he wasn't to pleased to see his
buddy. Banquo was a bit jumpy, because he too was thinking of the witches prophecy. We then
decided to read Act. 2 Sc. 2, I found it interesting how Shakespeare decided not to show us the
murder. (Gave the reader endless ability to imagine how gruesome it was)

To start off class today, Ms. Wray informed us that she recently got attacked by an octupus (AKA got a massage) and was covered in suction-cup shaped brusies. I don't think I ever want to get that type of massage. After an interesting conversation about that, we moved on to discuss further the video clips we watched last class. We watched two more clips to demonstrate the different characteristics that Lady Macbeth is portrayed to have. After we discussed these clips, we were handed a sheet of paper in which we wrote three appositive sentences about Macbeth. We also had a quick viewing of everyones artwork that they did for homework. It was truley stunning, inspirational, and moving.

Here are the scribes for the day,
We began our day by turning in our discussion questions for Act I Scene 5 of Macbeth. This was a most triumphant experience. After that everyone settled in to take their List 10 Vocabulary Quiz. Ms. Wray then had our class have a brief discussion on the last few scenes of Act I in Macbeth. We began to read Act I Scene 7...and were instructed to edit a passage from Macbeth with our table groups. Finally we wrapped up our spectacular day by acting out important parts from Scene 7 in front of the class.

Todays class was just great. OHH YEAAAA. says the cool aid man.
We kicked of the day by working some sentences on a worksheet that was handed out. After this we took a quiz on the packet that we were supposed to read for homework, we took this quiz as table groups, some groups were skewed!!( not mine ). after all of this we read Macbeth for a lot of the period and then discussed the characters. We also were given a motif and a worksheet to fill out when your motif comes up in the book. The homework for this class was another quotation and response for your Macbeth response log.

Ms. Wray tempted us with baked goods once again if we get 100% universally on the first vocab of the semester. Before this Lidya (sorry if i butchered the spelling) brought very good multi-layer brownies, if you missed them then I pity you. Then we collected homework, very exciting. Next we did a competition involving arranging vocab words in a cohesive paragraph. They were read out loud and judged for correct use and how many of the words you actually used. In short, my group won. We all then got chocolate (2 pieces for the winner, my table).

After the slight sugar rush from brownies, chocolate and the prospect of baked treats we learned about motifs. Motif, if you are wondering, is a recurring subject (such as a person, place, or feeling) that has some deeper meaning to it. We were then assigned motifs that will appear in Macbeth, this process was surprisingly entertaining. We also skimmed over equivocation. What also came up in this time was that Paul is apparently in a feud with Chris Macintosh, or in a very weird friendship. We then began reading the play.

A synopsis:
The withces keep singing (bad witches if you ask me). Their singing was enough to freak out Macbeth but Banquo was unimpressed (with a name like that you need a strong image). They tell Maccy that he will be king ('witch' is crazy because he likes the current king). To drive off any doubt Banquo has the witches also tell him that he will father future kings ('witch' is also crazy because if Macbeth's king then he would father the following king, not Banquo). Ross and Chand-Angus come in and tell Macbeth he is now Thane of Cawdor (woohoo), but Macbeth already knew this due to his witch friends who conveniently disappeared (I always feel the ability to vanish in a whim is just a deus ex machina).

Homework: 1 more for the response log, your motif chart, and the vocab test is soon.

We had an awesome day on monday. We started the day trying to figure out why the attendence looked different. I think Billy brought it up, and she showed us the HW which I will get back too later in this memorable essaya bout a class period. That was a mouthful. Huh. Anyways Bethany told all of us that she had a good night sleep. Mrs Wray thought it was good to hear. We all did a journal write focusing on a quote and our interpretations on it. Then we all stood in a line a we had a debate abut choice, and other important topic devoted to the book, Macbeth, who is a guy. We finally started the book and read the first line. Each table maid up ther own interpretations of the beginning of the play. I think ours was the best. We saw the quote as being a typical mafia play. But it ended up Andrew going in and our of character and me laughing my #^% off. Mrs. Wray has to admitt that that was true," the most giggle mafia, I've ever seen"(Wray, 2;30). If your still listening awesome. anyways that pretty much ended our discussion, and activities. Oh forgot, we learned about what paradox is, WIPPY, not. It's a statement or proposition that seems self-contradictory or absurd but in reality expresses a possible truth. You must say that in a british accient.

HW: read the green chainf of being thing (boring) becasue you might have a quizz on it next time. So thats all folks. Oh this is a hilarious...

Whenever I walk into room 201, the first thing I tend to look at is the white board, and the first thing I noticed today was that black writing that used to say "Do we have a scribe today?" wasn't on the board. About five minutes into class, I was feeling the urge to mention to Ms. Wray that we didn't have a scribe. But before I knew it, there was a pink scribe form with my name on it sitting right in front of me. "Darn it," I said after receiving this form from Ms. Wray, who then told us that our only homework due on Monday will be our sentences for vocab list one. She then went over what we had done during our last class period with the substitute where we were in groups and had to separate characters on a given sheet of unassigned lines from a scene of a Shakespearean play. This was brief, but what wasn't brief was what we did next: going over our final essays. Ms. Wray immediately put out there that she was somehow disappointed in the essay scores which our class received, which led her spending the next quarter of the hour going into depth on what a good essay would have contained. To do this, we read each stanza of the poem we analyzed for our final in quite a bit of depth. Ms. Wray then collected our scribbled-up notebook paper and Scantron sheets while she told us about our next activity. We were to decorate two sides of a sheet with marker and crayon showing the differences between good and evil. I am not sure why we did not discuss this but even more so why she collected them from us. (Are we going to be given a grade on our coloring skills perhaps?) Everybody was given a strip of paper with a line on it, and we formed a big circle where we read lines of a soliloquy from Mac Beth. Ms. Wray had the lights turned off, and we all used gestures while conveying emotions in the lines we had been told to speak. The lights were turned back on, and we were all sent to the library to check out copies of Mac Beth. Upon our arrival to the classroom again, we discussed with Ms. Wray our likes and dislikes of Shakespearean literature for the last ten minutes of class before the bell rang.

Flying_Panda (Gunnar)

Mrs. Wray was gone today! =( First off we took a survey on how to make Mrs. Wray a better teacher. (How is that possible?) Our substitute for the day was Ms. Burnett, she was a very kind woman. Everyone loved the joke she cracked on T.J. Dorado at the beginning of class. After we took the survey she handed out a handout on our Shakespeare unit we are starting on Thursday. We then had some people read some sentences in front of the class, that was very HOT. After that we practiced our Shakespearean talking by putting on a play using a script given to us by Ms. Burnett.

Things also included in my scribe notes by other people:
EMILY IS THE COOLEST PERSON EVA!
Tanner is #2!
(typed exactly how they were written on my page)

Now for some random facts:
- Apparently this week is spirit week
- Tanner shaved his head
- I am listening to I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith right now
- T.J. D. has an obsession with my thighs and often asks to see them.
- Billy is really good at pronouncing old english writing

Class Summary
First, we turned in our excellent, excellent poetry to Ms. Wray, and she promptly handed back to us vocab test 9. Following the completion of that, we listened to her recite select poems chosen from the ones we had just turned in. Afterwards, we embarked on our poem recitations, interrupted every five or so minutes by Adam trying to recite popular songs in poem format. We then talked about how we should structure our papers on the final, and then went home.

Important Stuff
On the Final:
Poetry terms (it will be on the wiki)
Vocab list 1-9
Poetry analysis

Duh, duh, duh! Lydia Jacobsen is scribe! Ahhh! Run for your lives!
Well, that was how my English class started , with Ms. Wray handing me the dreaded pink paper that meant pay-attention-or-fail-as-scribe.
Truth be told, it actually began with people writing their names on the board, as volunteers for the first few to say their poems. I was not one of them. (hehe) Okay now the class truly begins. Ms. Wray starts off by talking about an English trip to a Shakespeare Festival in Ashland that we students can take. If you want more information or want to go you can get the paper from Ms. Wray. After that we read a poem called "Explico Unas Cosas" or in english "I'm Explaining a Few Things." One half of the paper had the real Spanish poem wile the other had the english translation. Ms. wray had Colleen and Paul attempt to read the spanish part. Billy decided to read a couple of stanzas as if making love to the poem. It was a sad poem about the destruction of Madrid during the Spanish Civil War. Madrid was once a beautiful city that was then destroyed, 'come see the blood in the streets' it says. After reading the poem we answer a few questions in our table about the poem. You can get the papers from Ms. Wray. Then out of the blue our teacher tells us to lay down our heads and close our eyes, and picture something that we have a strong opinion about. That was the foundation forthe Imitation Poem. Because we now have to write a poem, just like "I'm Explaining a Few Things", about that problem. Once again you can get all the ifo from Ms. wray. Finally, we get to hear the Poetry Out Loud volunteers. First off was Mike Matt with "Invictus", then "War is Kind" said by Tanner. Then there was Gunner who expressed the poem "Dreamers", Adam wit "The Poet", Andrew and "Safe in Their Alabaster Chambers". Then Stevie with "So we will go no more Arobing", i don't know if i got the title right. Lastly there was Colleen with "Cartching Physics" Part I. We still have many more contestants to go, so be prepared and have your poem fully memorized. Also, We have a Vocabulary Quiz 9. Then we spend the rest of the periiod reviewing on Friday.

Its the middle of the week last period of the day. Only two days left until a three day weekend. So we have had these vocabulary words that we have had to learn and on this day we are quizing on list 8!! Before we took the vocabulary quiz I looked over at "A-con" and and of course she made a weird face back.... its ava what can you expect. Once everyone was done with the quiz we split up into 5 different groups, relating to what we are learning...poetry. The five groups consisted of about 3 to 5 people. At each group we had an object or words and had to write a poem relating to the object or words. Group one was Dictionary dig, then you rotated to Group two which was "Magnetic Poetry". Group three was interesting: the writing scence, after was Group four that was called "borrow from the greats", and last was Group five called "use your senses". Each group was entertaining and made class time go by fast. The bell rang but before everyone got too excited they all realized they had homework and had to come back the next day.

Today, class started 20 minutes late due to the fact that Ms. Wray had not consumed any coffee all day. When we finally did start class, we graded our sentence work sheet. I found it very easy, and I think most people did fairly well. After that, Ms. Wray walked around the room with a hat that was filled with slips of papers that had different forms of sound patterns and figurative language on them. My group, which also included Mike and Statler, was in charge of consonance/assonance. We got a piece of paper and needed to write the definition and an example. Ours was very hard, and the poster didn't look half as nice as some of the other groups, but I think we got the point across. Next, we went over the scoring rubric for the Poetry Out Loud contest. We learned that if you want a high score, you really need to understand your poem. That is why we are writing a poem analysis. It is a 1-2 page paper on who the author is trying to reach, the theme, the message, figurative language, sound patterns, and more. The final draft is due next class. While we were working on this, Ms. Wray let us listen to our iPods. Two things happened here, 1) I got teased for having 43 Jonas Brothers songs. 2) I found out that Mike likes Lady Gaga, truly never saw that coming.
Homework
  • study for vocab quiz #8, quiz next class
  • 1-2 pg. poem analysis; typed and double spaced

Mrs. Wray started our English class off with advising us to use quizlet more often because we're going to have a final vocabulary test with all of the words we've learned yet! Then we got the Poetry Out Loud contest evaluation sheet and went over the criteria to reciting our poems. Next, Mrs. Wray gave us a grammar lesson, where there was a colorful discussion on the word contentious and what noun it modified. We had Journal #9, not 10 because we're still behind. Then Mrs. Wray read us a story called Ounce Dice Trice which said fun words like gazebo. After we got to write our favorite words to say on a big sheet of butcher paper. They included words such as "caddywampus, Persia, wrist, granny panties, etc." We then edited our poems for unnecessary parts and then looked at proverbs. Then, we had to pick a proverb, change one or two words, and then write a poem that included 5 words of a list of about 10 in 8 minutes. Crazy stuff. Then a lesson on writing complete sentences.

This is the first scribe of the new decade for our English class...just putting that out there.
So we started out by Mrs. Wray telling us we really didn't have to memorize our poems by today, lucky for everyone who didn't memorize their poems, which I know is almost every single person, not me though, of course, the good student that I am..
Next we were told to get out our Lost-Quest Archetype guides and our poem packets. We read over the poem packet and discussed each poem in great detail, for most of the class period.
After that we started a little art project, called Fold a Piece of Paper in Three Sections. In those sections, we wrote down five emotions that we have been feeling as of lately, five colors of your choice, and five objects that are meaningful.
Lastly we wrote ten-line-minimum poems using one emotion, one color, and one object that we wrote down from before, and we were writing these until the end of class.
Before class ended, Mrs. Wray handed back our graded personal narratives, except for six of the narratives she hadn't graded yet, which will be handed back to the proper owners at the beginning of next class.

When I didn't see Ms. Wray after walking into the English classroom today, I was not surprised to see Ms. Rathbun as our substitute today. (This was my 3rd time having her as a substitute this week. What are the odds of that?) Once again, Adam had his guitar out before class for me to play. I usually use and have a thumbpick and fingerpick with me, but I didn't today, and playing fingerstyle guitar with a Band-Aid on your thumb is strange, tough, and it doesn't sound all that good. Regardless, we put it away after a minute so Ms. Rathbun could start class. However, she was delayed again when Bethany walked into the classroom with a huge box of leftover cookies from a (Spanish?) party, so of course almost everybody got up to grab one or more cookies. Once everybody was finally situated, with cookies in hand, Ms. Rathbun, with Paul's assistance, showed us the video about winter formal in January. (Ms. Rathbun thought that it was "very cute".) She then told us the plan for today and showed us the YouTube video, once again being assisted by Paul, regarding the Poetry Out Loud competition. (I was at the end of the video. And although my face wasn't shown, almost everybody recognized my voice immediately.) If you would like to see this video, visit this page . This video is being showed to all English classes in attempt to get more people involved, however, at least our class is required to participate in this competition. Ms. Rathbun talked a lot about poetry and her experiences with it. She said that the importance of poetry is its importance to ourselves and others, and poetry expresses something of importance. She then began talking about William (Bill) Stafford. Apparently, Ms. Rathbun used to be Mr. Stafford's neighbor. As this must have been very exciting, at least for an English teacher, she tried to pick up a lot from Bill. She stated that the most important part of poetry she learned from him was that a lot can be said without saying much. Proceeding this, we were shown two videos of winners/finalists of the national Poetry Out Loud competition. By this point, we were only about thirty minutes into the class period! (I know, I like to be detailed.) We were told to choose a partner to recite our poems we had found to. Many people did not seem to like their poems, so Ms. Rathbun told us that we are allowed to choose a different poem, however, it must be from the same website . We were then put into larger groups to discuss the poems in the poetry packets we received last class. Afterwards, Ms. Rathbun put us into different groups to share what we had found. I had been very surprised that nobody was going crazy since it is a Friday afternoon and there were only ten minutes left until winter break's beginning, but this changed immediately. Nobody accomplished anything in these groups (Sam and I even made one of those fortune fold things that everybody used to make in like the first grade!), leaving most of our poetry packets still pretty much empty.

Ok - long scribe notes today; I know. What you really need to know is this: 1. Have a FANTASTIC winter break! 2. Have the poem you chose MEMORIZED upon your arrival to our next class period together on January 5th, 2010 at 1:05PM PST.

Ms. R subbed for us today. For the first 10 minutes we talked about our homework and many other things. After we finished that, we worked on vocabulary words, by drawing pictures of what the word means and the opposite. This activity was a blast! Then for the rest of class we watched the movie of, Of Mice and Men.

so at the beginning of class we did a journal on thesis statement and what we believe is need in a thesis statement. after about 5 minutes we all compiled are ideas on the smart board and added them to our lists if it was not already there. then we were told to wright a thesis statement with our group, and while my groups was one of the best it was no easy task. oh and during the class period AJ kept saying some Spanish phrase which me and Emily had no idea what e was saying. any way after we wrought the thesis statement in our groups we tapped them to the back wall and as a class read through them all. and the last thing we did was share are in class group posters on "of mice and men".

Well what we did in class today was we took the vocab quiz, and we had our journal entry #8, talking about the reactions at the end " Of mice and men" and who, or what was to blame for Lennie's death. Rating the book from 1-10 and explaining why we rated it that way. Then we had a classroom discussion and people shared what they wrote down. A lot of people made excellent observations for their journal and also asked good questions. Ms. Wray asked what people thought of the ending and some students even cried.(Paul laughed at the end because he was expecting the opposite of it). 20 minutes before class ended, we drew paper's from the bowl and got into our groups, talking about the character's, dreams, death, etc. Billy was being funny in my group, he also drew a picture of a banchee, LOL!!!!!! Even though we didn't do that much today it is still important to know what happened and know the book from cover to cover.

English, B4. This class consisted of several of things. A dancing can was sighted dancing and asking us to contribute cans of food to the needy. We saw it on a youtube video Ms.Wray shared with us, the class. (even though it was not dancing) Than we took a chapter one to four quiz on Of Mice and Men. Uh ohhhh....1/3 of our class didn't do too well on the quiz, this caused Ms. Wray to become frustrated with the fact that a lot of people probably didn't read.If those people didn't read, than, they wont be able to contribute in, in-class discussions. Than we talked about cacophonous, which are words that contain loud, harsh and unpleasant sounds. This applies to most of the characters in John Steinbeck's book, "C"rooks, "C"andy, "Cu"rly, "S"lim, etc. The opposite of that, would be euphonious, which means soft and pleasing to the ear. An example would be like this excerpt from a poem by John Keats...

To Autumn

"Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;"

Next, we did a "What's Important" worksheet. We had to find quotes from the book and then explain what it meant in your own words; than we wrote how why its important to the story and you as the reader. Last, we got into...I forgot the proper term for it, but it was a class discussion in a circle and you had to talk like a normal conversation (no raising your hand). We also didn't have Ms. Wray playing devil's advocate so it was hard to have a discussion when everybody agreed. Our discussion was about anything in the book that we are reading.

Today's scribe is brought to you by the letter C...

C is for Cookie,
That's good enough for me!
C is for Cookie,
That's good enough for me!
C is for Cookie,
That's good enough for me!
Cookie, cookie, cookie starts with C!

HOMEWORK:

2. Study for vocab quiz next time

3. Bring cans of food to class

Today, we started class by going over the definitions of the words on list six. The words are pretty easy, so the test shouldn't be that hard. Somewhere in the middle of that, Ms. Wray informed us that her cat had ran away. Paul became very concerned. Then, we were assigned a number which went along with a word from the list. We then wrote a 30 word paragraph, personifying the word. Andy and I got the word, wretched. No matter how hard I tried, my paragraph came out depressing. Nothing good can come out of wretched. Ms. Wray asked Ayumi to go out to her car to grab some posters. Peter took this time to tell us about how in 7th grade, his teacher would ask him to go to his/her car to get something and he would end up moving the car. Moral of the story; don't trust Peter with your car keys. After that, we started to work on a worksheet that had to do with, Of Mice and Men. It was dealing with dreams and companions. While I wrote out very detailed answers, Peter informed me that it was overkill. Next, we went over the questions which turned into a heavy debate. Then, we picked names of characters from Of Mice and Men out of a bolw and got in groups with the other people who got the same name. We had to write down adjectives that described the person, find quotes that supported our adjectives, and draw a symbol. My group got Carlson. He was in the book for about three sentences, which made it very hard, but we completed the poster successfully. And finally, TANNER told me to put his name in the scribe notes, so there you go Tanner.
Homework

-read chapters 3 and 4 (pgs. 38-83)
-be ready for a reading quiz next class

We are sitting at our desk with our new pack of David and Goliath. Mrs, Wray missed a page so we had to re-staple the papers and add 1 in there. We read it so now it made sense to everyone. Next we looked at the 6 pictures around the room and we stood by one that we thought looked like David and Goliath. We did a very short timeline of our life. Mrs. Wray did an example and showed us how it should be done. Our class is somehow quiet today and i am liking it. Time to read another book, yes you heard it we have to read another book but thankfully its short. We checked out Mice and Men. When we got back we talked about the Loss-Quest Archetype. We looked at these very cool pictures and students were making very good connections of the pictures to how they could be real life or what they saw. It was a very fun and relaxing day, but we do have homework.

Our homework is to read Mice and Men through page 37 and sentences of vocab 6 are due on monday. Have a great thanksgiving and everyone enjoy there time off!!!!

Mrs. Wary started off the class by talking about the silent discussion from last class when we had Ms. Skelly for a sub. That didnt last long so we moved on to List 5 Vocab quiz which took about 15 min of class time. So its now about 1:35 and its almost the weekend. Mrs. Wray then came around and stamped the homework from "Noah" (the questions attached to the reading) it had little blue sheep on it related to the animals that all had to fit inside the ark.. who knows if she planned that or not. While Mrs. Wray was stamping papers with little blue sheep, at our tables we answered questions from the smart board and discussed for a few minutes. Then we moved on to a class discussion about "Noah". Next thing we know its 2:40 and the bell is ringing for the weekend!!! But unfortunatly there is homework!

We started off B4 looking over the wiki discussion which only 18 people did. Mrs. Wray was annoyed as usual about the homework acomplishment, but she still showed her corkiness which lifted everyones spirit. Then out of nowhere we have a pop-quiz on parts of speech. Luckily it didn't count as any points, and it was only to see how good we were at parts of speech. Midway through the pop-quiz she announced that the word "an" is an article, but it sounded like the word "and". Again luckily(adverb) the test didn't count because I would have been totally screwed. After the pop-quiz we learned that it was Ethan's birthday, so of course we sang the birthday song to him. Oh and he really enjoyed that. Following after our sing along, everyone got their journals and wrote a definition of the word, "create" and we began to discussed it. It seemed that people were getting really into the discussion. It almost seemed everyone was to into it, and in conclusion the class got louder. This made Mrs. Wray fierce and concluded the loudness to a chat, here and there. She seemed to handle the day pretty good. Anyways, after the super long discussion about creation we bagan our new project; The Bible. Mrs Wray read the very beginning of the book; Genesis. She asked us why we think we should read The Bible, and again we had a long disscussion on the beginning lines. That basically concluded the day, pretty boring I must clarify. There was no funny jests, or entertaining voices.
So For Homework:
-Read all of the packet on Genisis and answer the questions (ask Mrs. Wray for it if you didn't get it.)
-Also study for a vocab #5 quiz for NOV. 20th.
(If you're feeling down watch this (the greatest thing ever)

there wasnt much that went on in class we got new seats, we finished the movie Oh Brouther Where Art Thou and then Mrs. Wray handed back the test. she gave us a chance to change or add to the mini essays because people didnt do to great on them and she wanted to make sure that it wasnt a matter of people not knowing the information but that we just didnt wright it down on the paper. After we finished editing the essays for the rest of the period we had a free wright journal entry.
Hw:
  • wright a paragraph on the conpareison of a character in the Odyssey and a character in
Oh Brouther Where Art Thou
  • type it as a extended discisstion on the wiki homepage.
  • vocab list 5 sentances

The day wasn’t that eventful as we mostly watched Oh Brother Where Art Thou
. To begin we turned in your final draft for your narrative, most of the people I saw had pink paper meaning it was kind of a last minute thing though. With the final draft you were to have your rough draft, peer edit, and brainstorm as well. Most people kept their rough draft and peer edit, but a lot had misplaced their brainstorm, the piece of paper we made a circle and line on. Next we took the vocab test that you should have been studying for, or if your like me lost track of time do to the long weekend and thought it was an A day while it actually was a B day. During the quiz someone near me was whistling, so the atmosphere was not as hostile as some of our other tests. As people finished their quizzes people started to notice the festive decorations on the table, this is from Dr. Korach’s apparent love of the seasons. Andy attempted to spin a small pumpkin without much success as the last few people finished. We turned them in and Ms. Wray told us how she was actually quite afraid of staplers, frequently putting the stapler near her head and acting as if she had been stapled. It seems her fears were quelled however when she began to play with the stapler, firing it as if it were a gun a few times into the nearby tables.
We then switched out focus to OBWAT (my abbreviation for Oh Brother Where Art Thou because I do not want to type out the title every time I reference it). We got out the tracking sheet for similarities between the movie and the Odyssey like how Tiresias is the blind railroad worker, Ithaca is the treasure and Ulysses is Odysseus. We then started the movie. It began with Ulysses, Darlem and Pete being run off Wash’s farm and then escaping by car to a radio station. On the way they meet a black musician who agrees to help them get money by appearing on the radio station. It is quite successful and the blind radio host pays them. They are again run off however, abandoning the car. They then turn to hitchhiking and are picked up by George Helson, a bank robber outrunning the cops. They succeed and Helson and they part ways. During the chase however the officers hit a cow, the class was shocked. The three (the musician left) then meet the sirens who cause them to pass out. When they wake up Pete is missing, apparently switched with a toad. Going into town Ulysses and Darlem, and toad Pete, go to a restaurant and meet Daniel Teague who is blind in one eye (hint hint) and later mugs them. During the brawl he kills the toad too, and again the class is sad. It turns out Pete is actually being held by the sheriff, a sun-glassed man who persuades him in telling about the treasure before returning Pete to jail. Ulysses and Darlem go back to town where Ulysses meets his daughters who believe he is dead from a lie his wife, Penny (hint hint), had told them. Penny’s suitor (you get it) scuffles with Ulysses successfully, forcing Darlem and Ulysses to take shelter in a movie theater. In the theater they find Pete during a prison movie trip apparently and later that night they break him out. As they walk away from the complex Ulysses then confesses that the treasure was actually a way to lure Darlem and Pete out of jail so he could stop his wife’s marriage. The other two are furious but here chanting and find a KKK gathering in a clearing next to them with their black musician friend being held by guards. The three disguise as KKK color-guards and attempt to free their friend and then Ms. Wray stopped the movie. Right when the KKK engulfed them.

Odyssey TEST!!!
it was a long journey, but we made it.
we made it all the way through the the book and we all survived.
The test was not that hard,
but
Things that i noticed during the tes
t
  • Paul started dancing but no one saw him.
  • people had lots of trouble with Mrs. Wray's pencil sharpener it was really funny.
  • toward the end of the test there was a massive Scrabble game going on, more and more people joined as the game went on. But this was no ordinary game, there were no rules.

Then after we finished the test, we started a movie

First we made sure we turned in our Vocab List 4 papers, either e-mailed or printed out and given to Ms. Wray.
Next we got our Odyssey Unit Test Study Guide...oh joy. We talked about the study guide for a while and Ms. Wray
said she was very OCD and needed us to answer short essay test questions in great detail.
For help wih characters on the test there is an amazing glossary in the back of the book.
Next we got into groups by counting out numbers one through five. In those groups we each got passed a giant piece of
paper and were told to create pictures & statements of different sections of the study guide to help everyone review
for the test. After we finished the posters, which took a long time, we shared them with the class and took notes on
them all the way up until the bell rang.

In other news...

-Ms. Wray's son has swine flu. Don't worry she's using her hand sanitizer religiously. Plus she's getting her house remodeled and her son had no where to sleep. Tragic.
-Andrew is going to visit Ms. Wray's house one block from the Sellwood Pool and ask her for a cup of sugar.
-Today was a fruitful day.

Today started like most of our b4 class periods... without a scribe intil Ms. Wray showed us her new way of remembering. A big writing saying Do we have a scribe with daily scribe forms next to it. Paul made fun of Ms. Wray after Gunnar told her she was the best teacher by saying, " I like Mr. Paris if that makes you feel any better." We then received Myth grades if you didnt pick them up las class. Next we told Ms.Wray if we had brought in our Narrative Essay like we were supposed to. The rest of the class went to either prove reading or writing your narrative essays and telling us what we got on our vocab quiz.

So...yet another day of english class. Today started off with...SUPRIZE!! ANOTHER VOCAB QUIZ! I throughly enjoyed it and quite frankly it made my day. We continued class and wrapped up the myth presentations that we didn't quite finish last class. We also managed to make it about 50 minutes into class without a scribe. Someone tried to pin it on Stevie but apparently Ms. Wray doesn't give in to suggestions that easily. I can't believe we lasted a whole 50 minutes without a scribe!! I'm still all for the "sign above the smartboard" idea. Anyway, after we determined a scribe, Ms. Wray went on to elaborate about our Odyssey narritive essay. Some of the better goals that some of our classmates have are: becoming a professional chef, being homeless for a year, sailing to australia for a year after graduation, becoming a professional ballerina, etc. We had plenty of class time to get a good start on some ideas for our essay because the rough draft is due next class (10/29)
HOMEWORK:
write a rough draft of your narritive essay (2-3 pages, double spaced)

INTERESTING OBSERVATIONS:
-TJ wore a dress.
-Colleen made fun of me a lot.
-Paul wore TJ's wig and Evan's gas mask at the same time. He looked like an octopus.

YAY! I finally got in! I am now a member of this great wiki page.
So, time to begin. The bell rang that cloudy afternoon on Tuesday, like calling the pigs to the slaughter, that bell called us to class. We walk in and sit down with our groups, yes the Myth project is due the next class. For about fifteen minutes not knowing exactly what we are allowed to do, the different groups converse on their myth or on something else. (I'm not Superman i can't hear everything!) It turns out we are alowed to go work in our groups for whatever may need done. My group, in particular, had to go take a video out in the hallway so i don't exactly know what happened inside the classroom. Due to some technical difficulties my group, consisting of Peter, Ian, Tanner, Sam and myself, hadn't finished our video by the time we were called in. Thankfully the gracious and merciful teacher, Ms. Wray, gave us 15 extra minutes. After that we all scrambled back into the classroom. It turned out we were going to listen to Book 22 of the Odyssey on tape. Ms. Wray put the tape in and pressed play we all await quietly for what is to happen and then.....BAM! It's Dumbledore! The reader of this book, the voice, is the same one as Dumbledore's voice. So, we spent the last 10-15 minutes listening to Dumbledore read the gory, bloody and explicit writing of Book 22. The Homework that night was to finish reading Book 22 and finish the group myth.

Today was bring your family to class day, well it was for Ms. Wray. We got to meet her mom, dad, grandma, sister, and brother-in law, and her little neice. At first, we took our quiz over book 19. After that, we talked about book 19, which took about 20 minutes. Next, we got into our myth groups for the rest of the period. It was just one of those days were everyone just wants to leave for the weekend and be sleeping, or maybe that was just me, but it felt like that.

HW: Read books 20-21

Interesting things:
MIA: Yellow Vitamin Water. (which was never claimed)
Emily, Paul, and Mike got to leave early for band because of the parade.
Peter rocked the Osborne glasses.

Aight, heres my scribe notes

so we started out talking about our "Lessons of Mythology" thingy, it was that poem that we had to read. then all of a sudden BAM mrs. wray totally changed the subject to the daily scribe, a bunch of us suggested ideas to help remind mrs. wray to do the scribe notes. then out of the blue i got stuck with the task of being the scribe (ugggh, FACE PALM). any who, we talked about the "Lessons of Mythology" and found out that we need to do a skit, (that was the second highest point of my day, following the AMAZING game of dodge ball in P.E.) mrs. wray made a point of telling us that the skits "NEED TO BE ENTERTAINING AND INVOLVED"
after that we some how got on to a small discussion about what we learned from odyssey, i was reeeeeaaaaaaalllllly lost. it had something to do with culture, society... i think that it had to do with our Mythology thingy (the Lessons of Mythology thingy). we got into groups and "worked" on our "Lessons of Mythology" paper and kinda talked about the skit for most of the class. after that we talked about book 13. we found out that we were skipping books 14-18 WHOOOOOO YAAAAAAAA. but then found out that it was IMPORTANT that we read book 19, which brings me to the homework:
1. READ BOOK 19 (APPARENTLY ITS REALLY IMPORTANT)
2. FINISH BRAINSTORM SHEET (WE MADE IT IN CLASS, VERY FANCY...)

kinda random things i noticed in class
1. mrs. wray talks like a character from the show Dead Like Me
2. paul (sometimes known as phill, or sometimes called jose (by me)) played with a gas mask
3. the class seemed reeeeaaaallllly quiet

First of all, I'm really sorry this is posted a day late! Stupid history bill... ahh. Anyways, Mrs. Rathbun was our substitute (the one that brings candy), but unfortunately she wasn't able to go to Costco and buy the giant Halloween candy bags, so we get "imaginary prizes" the next time she sees us. Imaginary prizes are as real to me as imaginary numbers in math. OHHH. Just kidding. ANYWAYS, Mrs. Rathbun asked us to give an honest answer of who had not been doing the reading homework and like, 98% of the classes hands flew into the air. Then, we laid down under the tables with the lights off and visualized what the past 2 books were about while Mrs. Rathbun told us. We then had a picture activity where we were given pictures of things that represent happenings of the book and were asked to put them in order of occurrence. Andrew, Katie, Peter and Adam won. After a discussion, we wrote down in our journals our own predictions on what we thought would happen to Odysseus. She went around the room and gave a handful of people nice little stickers and then were asked to share their thoughts on the topic. Paul is convinced that the crewmen of our book hero will die of lung cancer.
A FEW OTHER THINGS:
1. Gunnar Holwerda was M.I.A.
2. Billy and Stevie ate a ham sandwich, Gatorade and Sun chips. What rebels.
3. TJ yelled, "NAKED!" while waving a ruler in the air.
4. Billy yelled, "ODYSSEUS IS NAKED!"
5. Okay, I swear, this class must have an obsession of writing on their bodies because Andrew, Evan and Paul all drew on their hands with washable markers.
6. Paul played paper football with rulers and markers.
7. Billy begged Stevie for a cough drop for like, 2 minutes.
8. Brian was born in South Africa and Paul was born in Prague, which is way cool if you ask me.
9. Peter made a marker tower with Sam and they tried to touch the ceiling with it, but epically failed.
10. The class was pretty rowdy today.

Sincerely,

A-CON

The bell rung and class began. Ms. Wray started off by telling us about the homework due for next class. We hadn't even been in the classroom for more than a minute and she was already talking about homework!! She did get a couple people excited with her summary about book 10 though. There were only a couple things I actually remember from her summary. Hermes gives Odysseus a plant to eat because he was about to go visit a goddess who turns people into pigs. By eating the plant Odysseus doesn't become a pig but instead "mounts her luxurious bed for a year" according to Ms. Wray. When Gunnar heard this he yelled out, "OHHH Baby". Okay moving on... Oh ya we took a quiz on Book 9 which, It was pretty easy if you read. After the test Ms. Wray gave us each a mystery number that made nooo sense. My number was 354-395. After a brief second of chaos, Ms. Wray told us to find other people in the class with the same number. Eventually we put two and two together and figured out the number corresponded to lines in Book 9. In a group we read the section out loud and made a comic strip about the section. This activity separated the artists from the non-artists. I have to say my partners and I are not artistically gifted. We made a cyclops that resembled Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc. and Plankton from Spongebob. We glanced at another group's comic strip and clearly they had an artist. There Cyclops could have easily been in a real comic about The Odyssey. Finally to finish the class we watched a film about Book 9. It was pretty funny especially the cyclops. It was only a step above how we drew ours. Now it's time for the best part of scribe notes... Homework! First, read Book 10 and 11 by Tuesday. By Thursday, make sure you have your myth read (assigned in class). Also, keep practicing list 1 and list 2 on quizlet because Thursday there will be a test on BOTH lists!

Gunnar Holwerda aka Flying_Panda

We started with a HOT freewrite for ten minutes or so. It was pretty sick if I do say so myself. It was hard for me to focus on one subject the whole time! Then when we were done we brought in millions of flowers and frolicked among them! Actually no....I sure wish we did though. We actually split into groups and filled out a worksheet (WOOOOOOO WOOOOORRRRKKKSSSSHHEEEEEETTTTSSSS!) about book 7. Tanner left my table and broke the law de Gunnar, which I was very disappointed about. Rachel was my tables writer and wouldn't listen to anything I said! So I stormed off in rage and hung with TJ and gave Jordy a high five. After about three seconds I walked back over to our table and finished it up. After everyone had finished Mrs. Wray decided we should discuss the questions. WE ARE NOT READING BOOK 8!!! DO NOT READ IT OR YOU WILL BE ATTACKED BY FLOWERS IN PAJAMAS!!!!!! Here is a short description of what happened in book 8: King Alcinous summoned all of the Phaecians and agrees to let Odysseus sail home. Then some buff and cocky kid challenges Odysseus to a discus throwing contest. ODYSSEUS OWNED THAT NUBCAKE!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! GO ODYSSEUS! Then Demoducus (spelling correct?) sings about the Trojan War, Odysseus begins to cry and Alcinous asks him who he is....CLIFF HANGER! DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNN! After the exciting summary of book 8 we transitioned into reading a little bit of book 9. DUMBLEDORE read to us!! Really, he did! It was epic, it made me want to sit down and eat some french fries and read some old English literature with him. It was great.

Random facts of the day!
Stevie thinks clouds are interesting
Jordy was tired
Billy says we should all get huge....not quite sure what that means but whatever!
A girl came in and handed Mrs. Wray four pens and eight pieces of paper
Mrs. Wray acted like a stoner who liked eating lotus plants
Mrs. Wray spilled on herself when drinking from her water bottle

Homework:
Read Book 9
Make up an interpretive dance routine about book 9. Just kidding!
Be prepared for a reading check
Complete your plot summary sheet up to book 9

Sam Lantow

We started the day off with a vocab quiz, which took about 5 minutes before we switched to senate notes. Colleen informed us that our theme for the our float is going to be "Laker Lion Tamers" and we are building it on the 24th of October, at Devin White's house. Also, there is no parking at Lakeridge for the football game, instead, router buses will leave the high school every 30 minutes and will indeed drop off at lakeridge*. We then proceeded to a Socratic Seminar, which is essentially a student run discussion that (theoretically) involves everyone, the goal of which is to answer questions about the topic and raise new ones. There was plenty of good, and in some cases, highly entertaining conversation topics like the significance of Nausicaa being described as marriageable or whether or not Penelope is going to leave Odysseus for the Calypso thing. We discussed how we did in the seminar, agreed it was pretty good, and then the bell rang.

Notes: Do not forget your book. Both Sam and Billy forget theirs.
Grades are updated.
Sorry this was late, i was sick for yesterday and am only feeling a little better today.
Gunnar continued his hilarity winning streak.

Homework:
List 2 sentences: Send within email text
Read book 7
Get caught up on book summary chart

*hopefully you did not need clarification for that.
If you did need clarification for that, maybe this will help.

We started class by introducing the PSAT {October 14} and discussed the benefits of having to take a three hour test at seven in the morning. We were then handed out packets outlining the test. {By the way you can sign up for the daily SAT question of the day at collageboard.com or something like that. Google it.}
Anyway then we talked about coffee for about three minutes before taking a reading-check quiz on book five. We were then informed that we are all going to become good readers under pain of death. We then did a timeline activity were we talked with other tables about the sequence of events in book five. I left about half-way through it to get some water and i had a great motivational speech from Mr.Paris in the hallway. Coming back in i was informed we were all getting a prize for doing the activity so well. The prize turned out to be our group list for another activity were we tried to recreate a make-believe scene from over 2500 years ago in ten seconds using construction paper, ties, and dinner jackets. Sam did a very funny Rick Astley to top off the mood.
I seemed to have jotted down 'Passage word' in my scribe notes but don't seem to remember it after being continuously hit in the head during football. Must have not been that important I guess. Last year classes seemed shorter. This is not a good sign. Well anyways the homework is:
-Read book 6
-And study for the vocab quiz NEXT CLASS because to succeed in life we all need to know what anthropomorphism is.
P.S. I've been told quizlet is helpful ... so yeah... use it.

tjbackstage -- TJ Pluhacek

To begin class today, Ms. Wray reminded everybody that our first vocab quiz is coming up on Monday, September 28th. We were reminded to use and study with Quizlet. After that, Ms. Wray told us how Greeks viewed the world: small and flat, which is quite odd compared to how the world actually is. We were then introduced to two new terms: epithet (a descriptive phrase about people or things) and epic simile (a long, multi-lined simile). In our table groups, we talked about Book I of The Odyssey, summarized it in a packet we were all given, and went over it as a class. For those who did not understand last night's reading homework, we also went over a few good reading techniques. Ms. Wray then told us that we are going to be skipping books II, III, & IV in The Odyssey, but we would still need to know what happened. To find out what happened, every table group was given a colored sheet of paper with a summary from one of the books we are skipping on it. As a group, we read, discussed, and paraphrased the summary we were given. Afterwards, we gathered as a class again to quickly read all the summaries and paraphrase them in that same packet we were given earlier in the class period. Ms. Wray began to read Book V, and she explained things as we followed along. For the remainder of the class period, we read some more of Book V with our table groups. And just before the bell rang, Ms. Wray reminded us of our homework.

Homework:
- Finish the rest of Book V of The Odyssey.
- Continue to study for our first vocab quiz, which will be next Monday (Sept. 28). (And remember to use Quizlet!)

Today was the day of our first quiz! And everyone was ready to take the quiz as Ms. Wray realized that she was short just 3 quizzes. What a bummer, as Gunnar shouted a loud "No!", Ms. Wray brought our attention to Journal 2 where we wrote about our strengths and weaknesses. Ms. Wray got the extra three copies, and we took our quizzes, as everyone finished in under 5 minutes. After we took our quizzes, we learned the correct way to send emails with documents to Ms. Wray and then discussed our strengths and weaknesses. The class learned that Billy is Bold and Stevie is too lazy to get himself water.
Prior to reading the first book of The Odyssey, we learned new vocabulary that will be present while reading the Odyssey. Ms. Wray also learned she had been pronouncing "hamartia" wrong for years. Finally, we started reading and furthered our understanding of the three parallel stories going on in the first book.

HOMEWORK:
Read the rest of the first book, but slowly, and be ready for discussion.
Study vocabulary (flashcards are on the wiki)

Day 1
9/16/09

Ian Gron3r
Here are my scribe notes for the day.

At the beginning of class, Ms. Wray introduced the class wiki to us. Our class was told that each student would receive an email from Ms. Wray, describing how to create their account on the class wiki by going to "http://losophs.wikispaces.com". Next, she then gave us a vocabulary sheet for the first semester. We talked about writing sentences for the vocab. words and went through many examples to get a clearer understanding on the homework (listed below). After we wrote our vocabulary homework down, we moved on to a discussion on Myth from our previous journal write. Then we began to watch an animated film called "The Trojan War", which led us to another discussion regarding the film. Ms. Wray then instructed us to work with our table groups, answering questions about the events that had occurred during "The Trojan War". At the end of the period, Ms. Wray introduced the beginning of the book, "The Odyssey", which we will begin reading as a class on Friday, September 18, 2009.

HOMEWORK:

Our homework for tonight:

Email Ms. Wray 12 sentences for each work listed in list 1 from the vocabulary sheet, which you will find the definition for at "http://losophs.wikispaces.com"!- Due: Friday, 9-18-09
